HOW TO RENEW YOUR SPANISH TIE
You can start renewing your TIE two (2) months before it expires (recommended) and up to 3months after it expires. Renewing it before its expiration date usually takes shorter processing time based on our experience.
In Barcelona, there is an office where you don't need to get an appointment to renew your student card or TIE. Simply go to Carrer Bergara 21, very close to Plaza Catalunya, between 9am-3pm (waiting and processing time usually takes around 3hours so be early!) and bring with you the following documents:
1. Document from your school.
You need 2 documents for this. One from your current school stating your performance in your current course. The other is the Acceptance Letter and Program Description from your new school. This should be written in Spanish and should state the details and duration of your program.
2. Insurance.
The insurance should be no co payment (no copago) and no deductible (no deducible) and should be valid for the entire duration of your program.
Some insurance companies offer 3months renewable contract. Even if it's automatically renewable, it should clearly state the duration of its validity which should correspond to the duration of your program.
I personally used Avi International and Swisscare. Both offers Insurance policies in Spanish version. Avi International has competitive rate and Swisscare is one of the most affordable, if not the most affordable, in the market. I didn't have any problem with Avi International but they asked me to provide additional document from Swisscare stating that it should be no copago and no deductible which I was able to get from the insurance company. It was accepted.
3. Empadronamiento
This is a city hall registration. You probably know how to get this document if you're on your TIE renewal now. But for the sake of the readers, the easiest way to get this without an appointment is by going to the main branch at Plaza Sant Miquel, 3, close to Liceu metro station or Las Ramblas. This would normally just take less than 10 minutes. It should be dated within 3 months from the date you would submit it for the renewal of your TIE. If it is not updated, you can go to the same office with the old dated document and ask them to print it with the current date.
4. Bank Statement
The amount required here is subjective. It depends on the length of your studies and the person processing your document. Just to be on a safe side, you should have at least six thousand euro (EUR 6,000) to your account for an annual program.
5. Modelos de Solitud
You can download the form here http://extranjeros.empleo.gob.es/es/ModelosSolicitudes/index.html.
Choose the Modelos Generales, then find EX00-Solicitud de autorización de estancia y prórrogas.
6. Modelos de Pago de Tasas
You can download the form here https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/procedimientos/index/categoria/33. Choose Tasa 052 - Tramitacion de autorizaciones de residencia y otra documentacion a cuidadanos extranjeros, then Acceder a Rellenar e imprimir el fomulario de liquidacion de la tasa 052 and fill up the form.
You can pay with cash or debit it from your account by providing your IBAN. Either ways, you will still have to go to the bank to pay and have it stamped. You can go to any bank to pay by cash but if you chose to debit it from your account, then you should go to your bank where you want it to be debited. It is possible to do it by some ATM Machine. You just have to scan the bar code and it would tell yo how much you pay oline.

When and how will I know the result of my application?
It takes 1-3 weeks for the result to be available online. You can check it by visiting this site sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/. Click Extranjeria, then Información sobre el estado de tramitación de los expedientes de extranjería, and choose Consultar con Formulario. Write your details and you will find the following results: NO SE HA ENCONTRADO LA INFORMCION SOLICITADA - Your application is not yet in the system RESUELTO - FAVORABLE - Your application has been approved TRAMITE - REQUIERIDO - You need to submit more documents. If my status says "Tramite-Requisito", what should I do? You can go to Oficina de Extranjeria at Carrer de Murcia 42 and show the online result. They will tell you what documents you need and where you have to submit it. They will also hand you a form that you need to attach when you submit the missing or supporting documents. You can also send an email at infoext.barcelona@seap.minhap.es. It is unusual here in Spain to get a fast response but they do respond within the week, at least as per my experience. They will send you the pdf file of the result and what you have to submit and do. The form that you need to attach along with other documents can also be obtained from Carrer Bergara 12. |
What should I do if it's favorable?
You should print the result and book a cita- the same process as when you booked it for your first NIE. However, you should only start the fingerprinting after the expiry date of your NIE so book a cita after that. They will not accept you even if you got the cita if it's before the expiry date of your TIE.
